If you’ve been following my blog you may recognize these children from an earlier post, Children of Corry, especially grumpy little Vernie and her doll. I adored this cabinet card so much that I purchased an entire photo album to get it. You can imagine how thrilled I was when Val of Colouring the Past selected this photo as one of the limited numbers of free digital colorings she offered in celebration of her blog’s 2nd anniversary!

I love antique and vintage photographs just as they are, even the torn and faded. If I didn’t I surely wouldn’t collect them. But seeing a sepia or black and white image transformed into full color is so much fun and allows me to more easily imagine the sitters as they were in real life. It’s as if they could jump right off the paper!
With every new image Val colorizes and shares on her blog, I continue to be amazed by her skill and talent. I highly recommend following her work. Here’s to many more Colouring the Past anniversary celebrations! Thanks, Val!
the rescued photo 
I love vintage photography and I know some in the collector community dislike colorization, but I’m not one of them! If it’s done well (Val did a beautiful job with your photo) it provides the image with a different, fascinating dimension, and it doesn’t hurt the original because it’s done digitally on a scan. I’ve colorized some of my vintage mugshots. You’ve inspired me to post them on my blog!

These are my thoughts too. Digitally coloring a photo does no damage to the original. I think it’s wonderful and Val is so skilled! I look forward to seeing your colorized vintage mugshots!

Thanks, Shayne. I wish the majority of people would realise that these colourings don’t harm the original. There’s a fairly long discussion below one of the previous freebie colourings I did and while I knew there’d be some people who wouldn’t like it, I hadn’t realised how strong some of their feelings would be! I look forward to seeing your own colourings. 🙂

I’m a huge fan of the art of photography – sepia, colour, or black and white. Val’s artistry with bringing an old photo to realistic true life is a true gift. To me there’s no debate on whether colour or B&W is better – there’s room for appreciating both, isn’t there?

Oh yes, definitely room for both. I’ve been thinking quite a lot recently about the ‘problem’ some people have with colourings (well, with any adaptation really of a photographic original) and I think they’re being rather precious about it considering they use digital media themselves, probably every day – I don’t think they realised that absolutely every digital representation of original media is ‘altered’, it can’t be anything else. Thanks for being so supportive, Linda – it means the world to me.

That is one unhappy group of children! And the toys seem to just add insult to injury. At least the boy didn’t have to endure the hot curling iron on his hair.

It’s an amazing photo, isn’t it, Liz? There’s all the trouble thge studio-set dresser (or whoever did it) went to, to get it ‘just right’ and then in come the kids and they can’t even be persuaded to smile! The first time I saw this photo, I burst out laughing and thought “if that were my photo, I’d colour it in an instant” so when I had to choose one of Sherri’s pics to do, that was my first choice!

That is a great picture and I love what Val did with it. It seems like the oldest girl has something like a tiara in her hair. Or am I imagining that?
