Lottie and Daisy Dale of Butler, Pennsylvania were sisters.  They graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio in 1890 and 1891 respectively.  The word “Athenaeum” is written on the reverse of the cabinet card photos and references a literary society at the university.

The girls’ father, David, was an oil producer.  About 1907 the family moved to Chicago, Illinois where the sisters worked as artists.  Lottie never married and died in 1930.

On one census, the young women’s artwork was described as picture painting which makes me think of landscapes and portraits.  But, this might have meant that the sisters added color to photographs.  Whatever type of art, I wonder if any of their works are hanging out in someone’s attic.

Daisy was a single lady until 1928, when at the age of 55 she wed Daniel Edwards, 58, in North Carolina.  Daniel was a traveling salesman from New Orleans, Louisiana.  Did the couple meet in Chicago and elope?

Daniel’s first wife and mother of his 10 children, Eugenie, co-founded a religious order called Missionary Servants of Christ the Master and Saint Anthony and became Mother Mary Theresa Edwards.  I have to wonder if this is what prompted the end of Daniel’s first marriage or if it was the other way around.

Daisy had just seven years of married life before her husband died.   She passed away in Chicago on June 12, 1960, at the age of 88 years.  I suspect she was laid to rest near her husband but found no record of her burial.
